The Periodic Spiral of Elements: Ongoing Research

Using a spiral model of the elements to simplify molecular graphs for mineral identification. Presentation about molecular graphing presented by me during the Moab Science Festival in September, 2025.

The Basic Idea: The Periodic Spiral of Elements is a tool used to simplify the geometric expression of molecules. Data collected at this event has been submitted to the American Chemical Society (ACS) Journal of Chemical Education in October, 2025.

Moab Field Guide (Navtec Expeditions):

I currently work as a backcountry field guide with Navtec Expiditions. Last year, it was an honor to work with the company, and especially Blaine Reigart of History Moab to create an Expedition’s Field Guide covering some of the local flora, fauna, mineralogy and history of the Moab area. Below is one such illustration included in the book which shows some of the minerals endemic to the Moab area. The first edition of the book (Published in 2025) is used for outreach / interp on tours and as a learning document for new guides.

I also love to bring mineral identification into my tours. People from all over the world can appreciate the word crystal. So why deprive them? I make sure to always point out the sparkling hills of gypsum crystals on the way to delicate arch. Or the fine manganese tendrils present alongside the dinsoaur fossils off of Willow Springs Road. People from all over the world visit Moab to experience its rich geologic landscape, and I am so grateful to share in that common ground.
